Best books of 2018

I love Goodreads. Although I’ll admit their website is a little outdated and clunky, having an online platform to keep track of the books on my ‘to-read’ list is essential. I also like how Goodreads prompts you to set a reading goal for the year, even though I’m pretty sure I would reach my yearly goal regardless. In 2018 I read 51 books, and among those were some really great reads. Unlike many ‘Best of 2018’ lists, my list focusses on books I read this year rather than books that were published this year. I hope you find something to add to your own list!

The Break is a stunning book that makes you feel sympathetic to all the characters in a way I've never experienced before. There is a strong female network, yet an underlying sadness and pain amongst it all. The author does a fantastic job of showing how we all have our own demons that effect other people's stories. (Note: Sexual trauma plays a major role in this story)

Saga is definitely my favourite comic book series…period. The characters are like none I've ever encountered, and I really enjoy the creativity of it all. Although the storyline is pure fantasy, the reader is often forced to examine concepts that are prevalent in our real world. I read volumes 1-9 this year and I’m still hooked. Even if you’re not a huge fan of comics, give this one a try.

Ready Player One immediately went on my favourites list. It was so incredibly exciting, and even though I didn't get a lot of the obscure nerd references, the creativity behind it all is incredible. I can’t remember the last time I stayed awake reading a thrilling book, but this one definitely did it for me. And let it be know that the movie is NOTHING like this book!

A surprising favourite about love, grief, and friendship.

A memoir that will leave you questioning who you are.

Beautifully written book about Japanese immigrants in the US.

An apocalypse teen novel that had me hooked from page one.
